1. Ants Ants themselves are not directly damaging to trees, but they often perpetuate an existing problem by "protecting" insects that may be damaging to the tree in large populations, such as aphids or scales. Tree Care Tip: Consult the UC Integrated Pest Management Guide. 2. Leaf Tip Burn Leaves that have browning tips or edges are often an indication of watering stress. This is common because of the high winds we often have in San Francisco, which can cause water to move through the tree and evaporate from the leaves faster. Tree Care Tip: Water a little bit extra during windy seasons. 3. Leaf Chlorosis Leaves that show signs of yellowing or "chlorosis" can have many causes, most of them related to nutrients. Common causes can include a lack of iron, nitrogen, magnesium, or soil compaction. If more than 10% of its foliage is affected, your tree needs some TLC. Tree Care Tip: Add a little organic matter, or mulch.
4. Leaf Chew Marks Chew marks on leaves are often a sign of caterpillars. These usually don't cause extensive damage. However, some chewing insects are more damaging, like weevils! Tree Care Tip: Try to identify your weevils with the UC Integrated Pest Management Guide. See a tree that needs help? Check out our Tree Care Resources and contact our Tree Care Team.
