Marina Madrone

Size:

Height: 25-40'; Spread: 25-40'

Character:

Evergreen; spreading form; dense canopy. 

Foliage:

Dark green, glossy, oval leaves, 2-3" long.

Flower:

Attractive white or pink-tinged flowers hang in 5" clusters, blooming October-January.

Fruit:

Striking yellow to orange-red, strawberry-like edible berries form in early summer and again in early winter.

Bark:

Interesting, red-brown, smooth and peeling bark. 

Tree Care:

Low. Requires light regular pruning to train a central leader and good shape; regular pruning needed less frequently with age. Some sidewalk clean-up during fruit drop.

Watering Needs:

Special Considerations:

Does not tolerate strong winds. Prone to aphids, sticky honeydew, sooty mold and powdery mildew (usually an aesthetic nuisance vs. health issue). Fruit can be messy.

Native Range & Notable Traits:

Cross between native Pacific Madrone and European Arbutus unedo. Desirable as a landscape specimen tree and attractive to local pollinators and wildlife.
