Ginkgo biloba ‘Autumn Gold’

Character:
Pyramidal or asymmetrical form; open canopy.
Foliage:
Light green, fan-shaped leaves, 2-3" across. Fall foliage is golden yellow; tree is bare November-March.
Flower:
Relatively inconspicuous
Fruit:
Male trees: no fruit. Female trees: smelly yellow fleshy fruitlike seeds in summer.
Bark:
Rough, light gray bark.
Tree Care:
Low. Early light pruning and staking to establish upright central leader. Water and keep protected during first 5-10 years. Minimal pruning needed once properly trained. Keep lower branches on as long as possible for fastest growth.
Watering Needs:
Special Considerations:
Prefers sun. Does not tolerate strong wind. Needs good drainage. Needs extra water in hot or windy conditions. Vulnerable to vandalism in early years due to slow growth.
Native Range & Notable Traits:
Native to China, very little native habitat left. Most trees sold at nurseries are male clones. Female seed is smelly, but an Asian delicacy when boiled or roasted. Leaves used in Chinese herbal medicine.
