About the event
Friends of the Urban Forest invites you to a one-of-kind walking tour in the Presidio led by arborist John Leffingwell of Woodreeve Consulting and Dr. Joe McBride, Professor Emeritus of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning at UC Berkeley.Â
Travel through time and see the history and development of the Presidio forest from pre-colonial times to modern-day plantings. See examples of the Army's afforestation efforts, the Presidio Trust's reforestation, current restoration efforts at Tennessee Hollow, and the future Presidio forest at the recently-opened Presidio Tunnel Tops park.Â
John and Dr. McBride will discuss tree species, diversity, and changes over time; the functions of trees at the Presidio; and the role of volunteers in planting and maintaining trees. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the trees of San Francisco from two, not one, experts in the field!Â
We'll cover roughly a mile on the mostly flat ground surrounding the Main Post of the Presidio of San Francisco. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes and bring water (to stay hydrated) and sun protection.
