COMMUNITY FORESTER

Seven week-long training course

Deepen your technical knowledge of tree planting, pruning, and community advocacy.

COMMUNITY FORESTER TRAINING

Our Community Forester Training is a free 7-week-long course designed to empower participants with the support, education, and tools they need to help with urban forest management and expand the long-term benefits of a thriving urban forest in San Francisco.

Participants gain knowledge, skills, and practical training to take action in their community. Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize key characteristics of trees in their neighborhoods, plant and prune following industry standards, illustrate the value of the urban forest to others, and become champions for trees in their community.

With a mix of theoretical knowledge and field-based learning experiences, the program prepares participants for various opportunities, such as:

  • volunteer leadership roles with Friends of the Urban Forest and similar organizations;

  • entry-level jobs in a variety of forestry-related fields;

  • continued study, including degrees and certificates in arboriculture.

The classroom lecture series runs on Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm. Each Thursday lecture is accompanied by a field session the following Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

Dates for the 2024 Training Program: January 18 to March 2

Thursday classroom sessions are held at our office in the Presidio.
1007 General Kennedy Ave. Ste. 1,
San Francisco, CA 94129

A light meal and refreshments are provided on Thursdays; packed lunches are encouraged for Saturday field sessions.

Spaces are limited to 30 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
